In this season of supposed “Peace on Earth! Goodwill to All Humankind!” one would hope to see—and experience—some of this peace and goodwill for oneself.
Little do you know how similar our experiences are. There are so many of your experiences that are like for like. It is hard to share a laugh with them now because to me they are tainted. I have had ferocious battles with old school groups on WhatsApp and now they don’t post support for their evil state. Still the genocide continues. I’ve been awake since 3.30am and this is what fills my mind my wife will soon snatch the iPad off me.
I'm sorry you're having similar experiences, Edijal. It truly sucks to actually care about others and to want to end all wars and genocides while others are "okay" with the violence. I think we just have to keep reaching out to each other who still possess a conscience and a moral center and learn to ignore the rest. And we have to keep fighting to save lives, because who could be next on the genocide supporters' list? They're not going to stop killing others while they think they can get away with it... So, it is a "battle of good vs. evil". Let's stay on the good side together. Bless you!
It's indeed disappointing that there's still so many that parrot the talking points from the mainstream media and the politicians, and who haven't realized the truth and at least acknowledge the crimes of the Zionist forces, and the fact that their own governments have been lying to them and are supporting this genocide.
I feel that especially in the case of US citizens, this type of response is mainly due to decades of brainwashing via mainstream propaganda, and deliberately providing them with news and analyses that're mostly on local events and issues, rather than international issues.
Thanks, Raveen, for your comment. Don't get me going on our local newscast and how they just copy and paste propaganda from the network. So intellectually lazy! I am amazed how many Americans are actually for a ceasefire considering how much brainwashing they've received about Palestinians. There may be some hope for us yet!
Thanks for your kind words, Angel. Those "guns" are hard to turn around, so we've all got to keep the "turning" going as a group. But I feel that Mark Zuckerberg is going to keep anyone who might be a "friend" on FB from seeing my posts. The "censorship industrial complex" is going strong. It's gotta stop along with the genocide.
Someone should refer that pastor to her own holy book - in particular that part about the Massacre of the Innocents. What the Zionists are doing to Gaza right now makes Herod's slaughter of the first-born sons look like a temper tantrum. For somebody who's supposed to be the moral compass and guide for her congregation, she's letting them down badly by not taking a stand against genocide and to hell with the 'legalities' of the official church stance.
It is amazing that someone who goes to graduate school for many years, learns to read ancient Greek and Hebrew (so you can read the scriptures in their original forms), and studies biblical history and anthropology, doesn't have a clue that genocides aren't a particularly new thing and happen all the time in our very sick world. But you're right about being a "moral compass" for others in your flock... If an ordained minister cannot or will not set a strong moral example for others, then perhaps they're in the wrong profession. If you truly love your church members, you'd want them to do good and "Love their neighbors as themselves" and wouldn't put any man-made technicality get in the way of demonstrating God's love. After all, in the Book of Acts, the apostles John and the Peter declared at the temple in Jerusalem, "Are we to follow man's law or God's law?" (One would hope God's Law of Love would win out every time, but apparently it doesn't for some folks.)
Each person is born into a tribal culture with premade empathy bags, some naturally larger than others. Life experience can stretch those bags to increase capacity, or shrink it.
That bag is where you carry your feeling, there to examine, there to ponder, there to carry more weight But you want to careful not to live in that bag for long periods.
Interesting concept, Malcolm. I just wonder if some have shrunk their "empathy bags" so small that they're microscopic and no longer work whatsoever. That could explain the sociopathic behavior of most of our elected officials, IMO.
My opinion is that the shrinking would mostly be caused by personally negative experiences no empathy involved. Though som may have been born with smaller bags, outliers, so to speak.
I am so sorry you experienced this from your church group. I have found that throughout history, the “moral decision” has rarely (if ever) come from an established institution -- the public has always had to push institutions into moral decision making. I hope you find comfort in knowing there’s a long line of radicals in history (including Jesus himself!) that pushed these institutions to evolve. I am not Christian anymore but grew up in the Church, and abandoned it for some of the reasons being discussed here. But I am wishing you the very best in either inspiring some change, or moving forward; whatever you decide.
Thanks, Zefan. I think that's a very valuable insight about not looking for morality in an "established institution." The status quo is seldom known for being open to change or innovation, particularly if it threatens the livelihood of the wealthy, the powerful, and those who think they're godlike and can do whatever they please, up to and including committing war crimes such as genocide.
I think God understands why we have to walk away from "organized religion" as it does become stale and unforgiving of any challenges to its authority. A great quote I read once says, "What's true of faith is also true of biology--if it isn't growing, it's probably dead." So many organized faith communities are essentially "dead" inside and have buried their morality or consciences under a pile of busy work and pretty stain glass. I think it's time for us to blow them open (apart?) and let faith grow and flourish. God isn't going to miss the "dead establishments" one bit!
I am not Christian but occasionally attend a nearby liberal church. On the morning after Israeli tanks fired shells point blank into the Al Shifa Hospital, I went to the service. There was NO mention of Gaza. None. I called the pastor the next day and left a message. She called four days later. I asked what role the church was taking. Did they have a peace and justice committee I could work with. No.
I went the next Sunday. The whole service was about the blessed joy of giving ... to the church. No mention of Gaza until just before the collection plate scam and she spotted me in the back of the church. She then mumbled out a totally unplanned babbly comment about wishing peace for the Israelis and Gazans. If I hadn't been there, she would have said nothing. I had put some cash in my pocket for the collection. I kept it in my pocket , got up and walked out.
I can't stand the timid hypocrisy of most churches, singing about peace and love and too timid to stand up and say a word. The same thing happened as Hitler came to power. Silence is consent.. They are their own kind of evil.
Same thing with political parties. I was once co-chair of my county Democratic party and very active. I'm now an independent.
I do political cartoons and you or anyone else is free to use them in any anti-war work you may be doing: https://mark192.substack.com/
I love your political cartoons, Mark. You're so talented! Everyone who reads this comment, check out Mark's Substack here. It's phenomenal.
I've experienced similar situations like you've had in churches over the years myself, but I have kept my lips zipped because I had children enrolled in confirmation there, was on different committees, sung in the choir, etc. I'm ready and willing to forgive people for being 'human" and not "perfect" and for acting like cowards from time to time, but one has to draw the line at genocide. There is no such thing as a "justifiable genocide". Genocide is Evil. And there is no quantification or qualification that Evil must meet--if something is Evil it is entirely Evil and cannot be justified.
Read about this logical fallacy and how I apply it to political elections and candidates in my post "The New Litmus Test" that I wrote a little over a month ago. Americans and Westerners on the whole really need to stop thinking that there is such a thing as a "lesser evil". Once Evil is let loose into the world, it's there to wreck havoc everywhere and to everyone, which is what we're seeing in Gaza and the West Bank and Congo and...
Thanks, and feel free to put 'em to work in any of your posts or other work. There will be a new cartoon tomorrow morning accompanying a story on some really disturbing news about profiting off the Hamas genocide. It is not getting the attention it deserves. You might consider using it.
Hope you don't mind but I snagged that "weekend" poster you had on your post to add to the end of tomorrow's post.
I "borrow" memes all the time from posts on Twitter, Facebook, etc., so feel free to borrow. If I take my own photos at protests, I usually mention I'm the photographer and they're free to use. Can't wait to see your next post.
How can we stand by when there's a genocide going on, and our countries are supporting it with money and military equipment? And then people are silent and calling us anti-semitic, even the Jewish among us who are also protesting this genocide?
I've also left online groups because there's not a peep about this coming from them.
That's a good question, Diana. Where IS our humanity? Have we in the West become so enamored of ourselves and our weaponry (the big H bomb) that we think we have the power over life and death over everyone else on the planet and can execute our godlike wrath with impunity?
I think a lot of us are going to be leaving many of our online groups and places of worship in the days to come just because we can't find any evidence of "humanity" in them. Perhaps that's for the best in the long run, but in the short run... It just sucks and it hurts. I wish I could say it gets easier, but it's not been my experience. But I am heartened to know there are like-minds out there who have a conscience and aren't afraid to say so. Bless you!
Bless you too. It's nice to find others who are willing to speak out about genocide. We need to amplify our voices -- until they're cancelled, which is quite likely.
The huge numbers of people on the street all over the world show us that lots of people are in touch with their humanity and willing to stand up for it.
The worldwide protests and our local ones do give me hope. I've met lots of good people there. I want to help them further their aims. But you're right--our voices are going to get cancelled in all likelihood by those who don't want their lack of morality showing. We've just gotta be stronger and keep fighting for what's right. It's what MLK Jr. and others did. We follow in their footsteps.
I agree. Why are we alive if not to stand up for what's right? I can't imagine backing down against genocide. It's still kind of unreal to me that this is happening for the whole world to see, but that the UN doesn't have the power to stop it, charge Netanyahu and his enablers with warcrimes and get people to the table to negotiate a just peace.
Good point--if we're not alive to love and care for each other, to support each other in time of need, what the heck are we here on this planet for? It is unreal--maybe it's "surreal"--how powerless the United Nations acts, but unfortunately I think that's the way it was designed. On paper it looks good, but in reality? It's a paper tiger.
When you have the so-called "Security Council" vetoing everything in regards to the criminality and warmongering of Israel since its very beginning in 1948, then you see that it was never meant to punish war criminals like Netanyahu or Biden or Obama or Bush or Cheney or Kissinger... It was just suppose to give them "cover." That's how it was described to me recently, and it makes sense as to why the UN will declare that a genocide is happening in Gaza and the World Health Organization will declare "Gaza is the unsafest place on the planet to be a child," but they'll do absolutely nothing about it. They're not meant to and if everyone outside of the "Security Council" voted to charge Netanyahu and others with war crimes? Well, nothing would come of it.
It's like how the US has passed an act of Congress nicknamed "The Hague Invasion Act" that literally says the US will invade the Netherlands and "rescue" any American soldier or official who is charged with war crimes by the ICC! You can't make up this kind of immoral corruption up! I hate to say it, but the US and other Western powers of NATO in particular are going to have to be torn down and recreated into actual democracies first before anything in the UN makes sense.
Our international institutions have failed us, and we need them to be effective. I wonder how things will change after this. It's being revealed how ineffective these institutions are and how completely out of touch the ruling class is, and how unconcerned they are about everyone else.
Here's hoping that one day soon these genocide supporters will wake up and have an epiphany that they have been used by dark forces to commit evil deeds and make amends to you and others they're slandering. Until then, find your comrades with a conscience and stick with them. Merry Christmas!
Yes, your true friends become more readily apparent with every day. It's amazing how many "friends" I thought I had were just "acquaintances" who never really had my best interests at heart or possibly anyone else's best interests at heart, especially those who are presently losing their family members in Gaza by carpet bombing. The dark forces are indeed strong, but let's hope and pray the Spirit of Christmas will end their evil reign in the New Year.
True! It's hard to please everyone all the time--even if you're the Son of God. Someone is going to try and knock you down or put you up on a cross just because you think everyone should be kind to each other. We live in a royally screwed up world. We gotta fight harder to get it back on track.
Love this so much. Thank you. I would be honored to be your friend. :) As a Muslim, I am even more horrified that so-called Muslim leaders and Muslim countries are just as silent if not complicit. As I recently wrote in my piece “Team Light v. Team Darkness: A Redline Moment,” the world is realigning on ethical lines not religious ones. God is with those of us who see and stand against the genocide, with all the blowback that comes with it. May God bless you.
Thank you for your kind words, Grace. I'm honored to be your friend and to tell everyone to read your fine Substack.
I think you've pinpointed exactly what's happening--it's not a "war" over religious or political differences happening. It's a genocide of all people who express an ethical or moral viewpoint that human beings are all equal and equally loved by their Creator/God. To kill even one of our fellow human beings is to become a murderer who is essentially telling God that we know better than God does and that we should have the power over life and death. To destroy those who have a conscience and empathy doesn't bode well for the human race, does it? Let's watch our backs and watch out for each other and pray that empathy might become reawakened in those who have put it to sleep in their hearts.
Keep going Brother - those who continue to support what is going on, those who continue to justify a genocide on the back of the self defence of an occupying force, those who tell us ‘to go f*ck ourselves’ and describe us as terrorist sympathisers for daring to suggest that international law be applied, will wake up one day and realise what they have done. Until then, enjoy the fact that you can look in the mirror every morning and be proud of the person looking back. Have a great Christmas :-)
Thank you so much, Riwaq. I hope you have a great holiday season as well. And it's true--the only person we have to look at in the mirror is ourselves. We have to be proud of what we see there. We can't give in to hate and bigotry. We have to keep hope alive that maybe at least some of these genocide supporters will realize what was being done in their names and refute it someday. Until then--God bless us all!

Very well said.

Welcome.
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by the reactions as well, particularly in the US and the UK.
Such awakening must persist and never regress.
¡Brava! This is from the heart and that’s what we need right to turn the guns around! And I think you have friends on FB you haven’t met yet!
Thanks for your kind words, Angel. Those "guns" are hard to turn around, so we've all got to keep the "turning" going as a group. Take action when you feel the urge, however:
Empathetic resiliency
Each person is born into a tribal culture with premade empathy bags, some naturally larger than others. Life experience can stretch those bags to increase capacity, or shrink it.
That bag is where you carry your feeling, there to examine, there to ponder, there to carry more weight But you want to careful not to live in that bag for long periods.
It is difficult to have new experiences
while in the bag.
Just sayin

Check out this short documentary on a small Mexican village creating a democracy. Beautiful film. I'll be posting it.
